ROAD FOOD: Eating better when away from home

Instant oatmeal doesn’t have all the health benefits of home-cooked oats, but it’s still a whole grain and has the same nutrients – and it’s often a far more healthy choice than the sweet rolls and bacon on the hotel breakfast bar.
It also can be prepared in a coffee pot. As this Food Network video shows, just pour two packets in the carafe, add a hotel packet of honey and one or jam, and put an orange tea (or other herbal flavor) into the filter basket. Pour 8 or 10 ounces of water into the coffee maker, turn it on, and it five minutes, you have breakfast.
You could use dried fruit – raisins, apples, strawberries, etc. – in place of the honey for sweetness. Or a handful of chopped nuts can add not only some crunch, but cholesterol-fighting healthy fat.
